Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha hi lo starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. A further round of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The players will need to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of entrants often get confused. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical notion in nearly all poker games.
A low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.
While it seems complex at the start, after a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi lo offers an overwhelming collection of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have several individuals trying for the high, and several battling for the low.
