Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he loved betting on various card games when he was young. He found himself becoming very competitive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a bit and relocated to New York to play some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were rough as he played many hours and lost most times. He earned some additional money by being an runner for the poker players. He believed he possibly could improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and focus attention even more on the game.

The definite advancement in his abilities happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would frequently compete against each other. He had access into a few of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would tweak his cunning thinking abilities. He applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit holdem.

Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the proper decision. He told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and play in the WSOP tournaments. She is one of the strongest women players the poker world today. He headed to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the successive decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
