Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he loved playing numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming really competitive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a little while and moved to New York City to participate in some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he would play countless hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He earned some additional cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could improve his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an attempt to acquire more rest and focus attention more on the game.

The real advancement in his abilities happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would regularly challenge one another. Howard was able to access some of the foremost players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking techniques. He applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL hold’em.

He also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. He told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard Lederer relocated to Sin City in 1993 and participated in money games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
